Layne Rowe - COLLECT 2015 Artist Profile

Two years ago Layne Rowe’s mesmerising Woven series was one of the main talking points at Collect. It made the cover of the show’s brochure and showed just what leaps were being made in the glassblowing industry...

The question which follows, of course, is whether this puts extra pressure on Layne to repeat this success?

“You always put yourself under pressure but you can’t force things,” he says philosophically. “There is a constant need to deliver something great but while that can be draining it also gives you great energy too - there’s a lot of amazing artists on display and you want to be part of that buzz.”

This year’s focus will be on his experimentation with colour which infuse his new pieces.

“There is quite a lot of mileage in the work I’m doing and so I’ve been concentrating on playing around with the colours and tones,” Layne points out.

“It’s fascinating to see how colour can affect the way a piece looks so it’s been a really enjoyable process as well as a stressful one.”

What does he hope people see when they view his work?

“I want people to see how intricate the work is, how much effort and skill has gone into making it. I also want them to see its validity and that it’s a complete one-off,” he says.

“That’s why I love talking to people at the shows - to give them an insight into what’s gone into making a particular work.

“The Private View on Friday at Collect is great for feedback although sometimes people can be crushingly honest or outspoken. You have to take it with a pinch of salt because for everyone who doesn’t like it there’ll be others who do.

“2013 was definitely a great year and will always be very difficult to repeat but Collect can shape your whole year so I’m hoping it’s a good one.”
