Tim Rawlinson - COLLECT 2015 Artist Profile

Tim Rawlinson not only has a lovely way with glass, he also has a lovely way with words...

“My work is all about the interplay of light with glass,” he explains. “Light excites glass and it’s that ever-changing interaction between the two that enables my pieces to change throughout the day.”

The optical effect of Tim’s signature pieces for Collect - entitled Parallax, Light Vortex and Echoes of Light - are breathtaking.

“Sometimes things work much better than you expect,” he says truthfully. “I spent a lot of time at uni making lenses and projecting light through them but even once a piece is finished you can see a shadow or a view that makes the piece even more complete.

“Parallax underlines that. Depending on the light and your perspective what you might be seeing could actually be an illusion rather than the actual piece itself.”

After making his debut last year, to rave reviews, Tim understands the importance of a strong showing again this time round.

“Last year was phenomenal,” he remembers. “I sold and also had lots of commissions. It pretty much kept me busy until Christmas so definitely hoping for more of the same this year.”

Tim’s certainly going into Collect 2015 on a high - his Light Vortex series shortlisted for the International Glass Prize in Belgium.

“It’s an honour, especially as there are only four people from the UK who have been shortlisted,” Tim says. “There are some huge names on the shortlist so I doubt I’ll go further but it’s a real boost and something I’m extremely proud of.”
