The full run-down:
London Glassblowing Studio and Gallery offers its customers the opportunity of a one day introductory class. These popular sessions are designed to teach basic techniques under the tuition of our highly qualified glass artists. The emphasis of the day is to provide an enjoyable and productive hands-on experience. We cover all the basics – gathering and shaping the molten glass, blowing and forming.
Through demonstration and close supervision you will quickly acquire an understanding of the working properties of glass, learn to centre, turn, stretch and control glass in its molten form and gain the confidence to manipulate this extraordinary material in a variety of ways.
Working in teams of three, with one teacher, you will discover different approaches to working with hot glass. We will explore form, texture, colour and pattern to create a series of solid glass objects as well as blown vessels. You will learn about the movement, timing and communication needed by the glassmaker to create innovative and challenging pieces.
Classes last the whole day, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, with an hour lunch break. A maximum of six students is enrolled for two experienced tutors, so instruction is intensive and, by all accounts, most enjoyable. Previous experience is not necessary. Your class includes all tuition and materials and the finishing of your pieces.
The cost for the day is £450, and also includes a light lunch at a Bermondsey Street restaurant. You will make 3 to 4 pieces that you can collect during the week following your class.
Due to their popularity, classes book up four to six months in advance, so early booking is recommended.
Classes are held on Saturdays and occasionally on Sundays.
